Omega Alpha D-Glucosamine & Chondroitin Details
Chondroitin Sulphate, although not as well absorbed as glucosamine sulphate (8% vs. 98%), has still been shown to be effective in the repair and restoration of cartilaginous tissue.
Chondroitin Sulphate is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of repeating units of galactosamine (the stereoisomer of glucosamine). Like glucosamine, it is a substance responsible in the chain of events that help repair and restore cartilaginous tissue.
All glucosamine products available to consumers contain a mixture of D-Glucosamine andL-Glucosamine and are manufactured from specially processed chitin obtained from shrimp, lobster and crab shells. However, during processing both D-Glucosamine and L-Glucosamine are formed, yet the body only uses D-Glucosamine for the manufacture of the building blocks of cartilage as well as for the formation of ligaments.
Using a patented method for processing chitin, the scientists at Omega Alpha have produced a Glucosamine Sulphate product that contains D-Glucosamine exclusively. Glucosamine is commercially available in 3 forms: Glucosamine Sulphate, Glucosamine Hydrochloride and N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG). Studies have shown that the Glucosamine sulphate molecule also provides a SULPHUR molecule which is essential for the manufacture of cartilage and ligaments. For best results choose the Glucosamine product that contains only the D version of Glucosamine.
